Jet Noise Control

Pioneering work on subsonic and supersonic jet noise is being conducted in the Gas Dynamics and Turbulence Laboratory under Dr. Samimy

Heated Jet Facility for noise mitigation research in commercial and military aircraft using patented plasma actuators

The turbulence structure of the jet gets modified by the interactions with plasma actuators placed on the periphery of the jet.  This changes the modal content at different frequencies and results in a significant reduction of jet noise.  The power of this innovative technique is that you can turn the actuation on take off and approach when you need it and turn it off at cruise and do not pay any performance loss associated with their operation.  This work is sponsored by NASA and the US Navy.
